One of Chicago’s top chefs, Jimmy Bannos, talks about National Hellenic Museum’s KOUZINA, coming up this November 5, and why it’s one of his favorite events.
Best known for his iconic Heaven on Seven restaurants, Jimmy Bannos, a third generation restaurateur, is a proud Greek American and someone who likes to give back.
His son, Jimmy Jr., a James Beard Award-winning chef (Rising Star Chef) followed in his footsteps. They’re both co-owners and visionaries of The Purple Pig, which was named as one of the top 10 restaurants in the US. Jimmy also owns Juicy-o, restaurants specializing in breakfast and lunch.
Not just one of the most notable Greek American chefs, Jimmy is one of the city’s top chefs, and is very active in the culinary world.
Always looking to give back, Jimmy’s been involved in KOUZINA for many years. Here’s what Jimmy had to say about the event, now in it’s 6th year:
Good for the Greek community
“It’s a really great event, and good for the Greek community. It’s very exciting to get everyone involved, and all the chef’s energized for our Greek community. It’s one of my favorite events. It means a lot to me to be involved, and help bring in some of the chefs.”
Why KOUZINA is such a great event
“It’s a great way to showcase the museum to the city, and what we’re about, as a community. It’s also great for the culinary community. Chefs create an interpretation on Greek cuisine, or a signature dish. Some invent something special for the event. It gives them a chance to stretch their creative muscles.”
On the chefs
“Not all the chefs are Greek, which adds another dimension to the event. Besides, if they were all Greek chefs, most of the city’s restaurants would be closed for the night! Our city is a melting pot. Besides, these chefs want to get out there, they want to give back, too.”
